The Texas Board of Education vote 14-0 to reject a textbook that critics say depicts Mexican-Americans in a negative fashion.
The textbook, "Mexican American Heritage," was the only book received by the Board of Education, when the Board made a call for new social studies books.
According to a quote by Board member by Thomas Ratliff, to the Texas Tribune, Ratliff said that the publisher of the book could still sell the textbook to school districts, but it would not appear on the Board of Education's list of approved instructional materials.
Amarillo's member of the Board of Education, Marty Rowley, also addressed the Board of Education's book review process, in September, saying, "Several years ago the Board's authority to review and approve materials was significantly reduced. Fortunately, some vestige of authority still exists, so that the public was given the opportunity to speak to this book. And speak they did! We heard over 100 testifiers, from Texas State Senators to middle school students from all over the state. I personally believe that the public from all walks of life should have input into the textbook approval process."
