The Amarillo Police Department is reporting that a stolen car has been recovered and a suspect is in custody.
According to APD, an officer was checking the parking lot in the 800 block of North Lincoln, yesterday morning. The officer saw a black 2006 Buick on the lot that was backed up against a fence. The officer checked the vehicle's tag and determined that it had been reported stolen.
The officer located the driver asleep inside of the car. Officers took the driver into custody and a warrant check revealed that the driver was wanted for burglary of a habitation in a March 12th burglary in west Amarillo. Officer's checked the driver's backpack and found 29 different identifying documents that belonged to 10 different people.
The driver was identified as Ashton Simmons, 22, and was booked into the Potter County Detention Center on charges of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, the warrant for burglary of a habitation, and fraudulent use or possession of identifying information.
Investigators have not yet tracked each piece of identifying information to which in crime each was stolen.
