Former Amarillo Independent School District Trustee John Betancourt is considering making a bid for higher office in 2020.
The former trustee announced in a Facebook post on Tuesday night that he is considering launching a bid to replace State Board of Education member Marty Rowley in District 15. Rowley has announced that he will not seeking a third term in office, according to KCBD-TV.
“I welcome you all to participate in the exploration process and I am looking forward to working with all of you,” Betancourt said in his Facebook announcement. “The children and educators of District 15 deserve an experienced public education advocate representing them in Austin!”
Betancourt did not specify which party’s nomination he will seek if he does run in 2020.
First elected in 2015, Betancourt served four years on the Amarillo ISD Board, before being ousted in a crowded cumulative election in 2019. Betancourt also served on the City of Amarillo’s TIRZ #2 Board.
Candidates will have until December 9 to declare for the seat.
