Former Amarillo Independent School District Trustee John Betancourt has signed on to run for the District 15 State Board of Education seat in 2020.

Betancourt filed last week to run as a Democrat to replace retiring board member Marty Rowley, who is a Republican. Betancourt is the first Democrat to sign on to run for the seat and joins Republican Jay Johnson in the race.

John Betancourt served as a trustee for the Amarillo Independent School District from 2015 through 2019, losing his bid for re-election in a crowded cumulative election.

Candidates will have the chance to file for spots on the ballot through December 9.
