While much of the focus ahead of 2020's presidential election has been on the record-setting field of Democrats hoping for their shot to challenge Republican President Donald Trump, one businessman has been quietly assembling his campaign to take on the 45th President in his own party's primary.
Roque “Rocky” De La Fuente is challenging Trump in the 2020 Republican primary and has already achieved ballot access in a number of states, including in Texas. At the time of this writing, De La Fuente is one of only two challengers on the ballot for Trump, while several other prominent contenders have not even secured ballot access in the Lone Star State.
De La Fuente presents himself as a viable alternative for Republican voters looking for a change in Washington. De La Fuente started his first business at the age of nine and has since operated companies across the nation in a variety of industries. In 2016, De La Fuente made his first foray into electoral politics, running in the Democratic Party's presidential primary and placing third in Texas behind Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders.
Looking ahead to 2020's election, De La Fuente has big plans, if elected. One of his biggest reasons for running is about making a positive change in Washington that he feels does not currently exist.
“The President is supposed to be there to unite the country, to create jobs, and to create opportunity,” De La Fuente said. “He's not supposed to be there to pick sides and insult everyone.”
His platform should be no surprise considering his business background. De La Fuente's campaign emphasizes job creation in the U.S. and pursuing growth of the country's gross domestic product (GDP). This can be accomplished, De La Fuente believes, by government out of the way.
“The federal government and the states are doing everything they can to stop job growth,” De La Fuente said.
In every decision, he says his goal is to see job creation across the U.S.
“Jobs, jobs, and more jobs,” De La Fuente says.
On immigration, De La Fuente says he opposes building a border wall, saying he instead views the Rio Grande as a “national barrier.” However, De La Fuente feels the issue of immigration must be viewed through a lens of innovation, as he proposes building a "Canal of the Americas" as a solution to the issue. De La Fuente says he supports building the canal between Costa Rica and Nicaragua to create opportunity in Central America. The businessman notes that many immigrants are seeking jobs and opportunity when coming to the United States, and he feels the project would create opportunity for Central Americans at home.
Addressing the hot topic of gun violence and gun control proposals, De La Fuente says he supports "protecting the Constitution and the Second Amendment." While he is aware of the proposals for gun control that have come out of Washington in recent years, he says one of the most important jobs of the next President will be to protect the entire Constitution, including the Second Amendment.
"We have the right to bear arms," De La Fuente notes.
His proposal for addressing the issue of mass shootings is not more gun control, but expanded access to mental healthcare.
"We have got to figure out how to expand healthcare," De La Fuente said.
At the end of the day, while he knows he is facing an uphill climb in challenging an incumbent President in his own party's primary, he feels that he has the right ideas, platform, and background to earn the support of Texas primary voters.
"I am logical, I am practical, and I am common sense," De La Fuente says.
De La Fuente will appear opposite Trump in the March 3, 2020 Republican primary election. Trump is also being opposed by Joe Walsh and Bill Weld, although neither has filed for the ballot.
