APD: Scam Caller Posing as Detective

Amarillo Police say another scam call is hitting the area, this time with the caller posing as an APD detective.

According to APD, a person is reportedly calling Amarillo residents, posing as “Detective McCoy.” The subject has a deep male voice and is very intimidating, also talking very fast. The calls are believed to be received on Thursdays and Fridays before paydays. Some calls also came around a holiday.

APD says no officers at the department are named “Detective McCoy” and officers will not call to threaten citizens. APD says usually, citizens will be contacted in person or by letter. Residents can also ask officers for identification. Residents are also reminded to provide no personal or financial information over the phone.

If you have any information about this call, you are asked to call APD at 806-378-4257.
