Texas Railroad Commissioner Ryan Sitton will not be advancing to the November general election after being upset by little-known challenger James “Jim” Wright.
According to unofficial results from the Texas Secretary of State’s Office, Wright received 1,017,372 votes, or 56 percent, against Sitton’s 797,658 votes, or 44 percent. The result was a surprise as Wright had about $13,000 in campaign cash as of the most recent finance reports versus over $2 million in the bank for Sitton.
Sitton conceded the election on Tuesday night shortly after the race was called.
The result gives Republicans a new candidate for the November general election, as Democrats are still sorting out who will represent their party. Attorney Chrysta Castañeda and former State Rep. Roberto “Beto” Alonzo are headed to a runoff to decide that primary. The winner will face Wright in November.
