Democrat Matthew Dowd has launched his campaign to unseat incumbent Texas Lieutenant Gov. Dan Patrick next year.
Dowd, a media personality and former strategist for President George W. Bush, launched his campaign for the lieutenant governorship on Wednesday, joining a primary race that already includes the 2018 Democratic nominee for the seat, Mike Collier.
In a letter posted to his campaign website, Dowd highlighted why he decided to join the race as a Democrat this year, while also taking aim at Patrick.
“For their sake and for every Texan, I am angry and won’t stop fighting,” said Dowd. “That is why I am running as a Democrat for Lt. Governor. Dan Patrick, the current Lt. Governor, has repeatedly lied, misled, and waged a hateful culture war against us, endangering each of our lives but especially the most vulnerable: whether it be on the pandemic, the failed electric grid, voting rights, guns, or equality for all and access to health care.”
Following Dowd’s announcement, Collier’s campaign also released a statement, challenging the political newcomer to explain his views to voters.
“After 20 years working to elect Republicans across the country, we welcome Matthew Dowd back to the Democratic Party,” Collier said. “Mr. Dowd—you may notice things have changed a lot since you were working for Republicans. Democratic voters will be interested to hear how selling a false war, ensuring the deciding Supreme Court vote to overturn Roe v. Wade, and leading the charge to pass numerous anti-marriage equality ballot measures have shaped your current views.”
The primary election for this office will likely be held early next spring, but may be delayed due to redistricting.
